Applications for Board of Investment (BoI) privileges from January to Dec 20, 2012 totalled 1.127 trillion baht, the highest ever, Industry Minister Prasert Boonchaisuk said on Thursday.
The number of projects rose from the same period last year by 9% to 2,180, underscoring investor confidence in Thailand's prospects. The investment worth was up 77%, from 634.25 billion baht reported over the same period last year, the minister said.
Services and utilities accounted for the biggest share by value, with 601 projects and investment capital of 373.82 billion baht, Mr Prasert said.
Metal products, machinery, automobile and auto-part industries came second, with 544 projects and a combined investment cost of 239.64 billion baht, followed by the chemicals, plastic and paper industry, with 281 projects and a total capital of 204.02 billion baht.
Electronics and electrical appliances took fourth rank, with 324 projects and investment capital of 146.80 billion baht.
Fifth was the agriculture and agricultural products sector, with 280 applications and a total investment cost of 76.30 billion baht.
Udom Wongwiwatchai, BoI secretary general, said on Thursday that investment capital had hit a record high since the setting up of his office, reflecting strong confidence in Thailand’s economic fundamentals.
It also showed the country’s potential for becoming an investment hub of the region when the Asean Economic Community debuts on Dec 1 2015, the minister said.
